Job Description Summary The purpose of this job is to assist the Forester in leading and coordinating teams involved in designing and maintaining parks, nature areas, trail system, tree-scaping, and landscaping in accordance with urban forestry maintenance principles and practices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. - Leads and coordinates tree maintenance activities in the City's public areas, including planting, pruning, mulching, watering, and disease treatment work.
- Oversees and conducts tree risk assessments and assist with the removal of trees on city park property, along city trail easements, and in downtown tree wells.
- Builds and maintains the City's pedways, footpaths, and trail systems.
- Leads and oversees maintenance and restoration efforts in the City's nature areas, including ecosystem management, control of non-native and invasive plant species, and prairie and forest restoration and health management activities.
- Researches, recommends, and coordinates procurement of materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Creates and maintains detailed and accurate records.
- Provides customer service to patrons.
- Operates and maintains light, medium, and heavy motorized equipment.
- Trains and provides day-to-day guidance to assigned staff and volunteers.
- Leads public outreach and education efforts; participates in continuing education and professional development as required.
- Coordinates and performs snow removal and ice prevention.
- Purchases tools, materials and supplies.
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities - No supervisory authority. Work does require providing guidance and training to others.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered Education and Experience - High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate or technical degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Parks and Recreation, construction, or related field strongly preferred.
- 3 to 5 years' experience in forestry, landscaping, grounds maintenance, or similar work.
Licenses or Certifications - Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 6 months of hire.
- Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification.
- International Society of Arboriculture's Arborist Certification preferred.
- Missouri Certified Pesticide Applicator License within 6 months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position Knowledge of: - Urban forestry practices, trail system design and maintenance, prairie and forest restoration and management.
- Standard practices and methods of operation of various hand tools and landscaping and forestry equipment such as saddle tree climbing techniques, aerial lifts/bucket trucks, tree spades, wood chippers, dump trucks, and skid loaders with attachments.
- Work site and personal safety related to Arboriculture, particularly those outlined in the ANSI Z133 Safety Standards.
- Safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools, equipment and forestry related pesticides and herbicides.
Skill in: - Estimating time and materials needed to complete jobs.
- Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.

Hours/Days 7:30am- 4pm Monday through Friday
Starting Salary $25.43/hr to $31.01/hr; commensurate w/ training and experience

Special Instructions to Applicants This is a forestry position with the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department. Candidates must be able to perform forestry and natural resource maintenance work in our parks system.
Candidates should have a Class A Commercial Driver License with air brake endorsement or the ability to acquire within 6 months of hire.
This is a full-time position with benefits and a minimum salary of $25.43 per hour.
Position hours: 7:30am to 4pm Monday-Friday.
