Title: District Resource Conservationist

Department: Hendricks County Soil &Water Conservation District

Supervisor: Hendricks County Soil andWater Conservation District Board

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Incumbent serves at the Resource Conservationist for the Hendricks County Soil and Water Conservation District, responsible for planning and implementing conservation programs and providing technical assistance and education to County residents and landowners.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Not intended to be a complete or comprehensive list):

  • Promotes on-going District activities, such as Porter Farm, field days, Ag Day, and Conservation Corner. Promotes tree sales program.
  • Coordinates and presents conservation education programs, classroom activities, teacher workshops, and adult education programs, including scheduling and arranging field tours, field days, fair displays, and/ or meetings for groups interested in natural resources, water quality and soil health
  • Organizes, implements and participates in public events, such as Earth Day, Conservation Days, etc.
  • Assists in organizing annual meetings, adult and youth conservation tours, and other District, Hendricks Clean Water Partnership and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) events.
  • Attends monthly meetings of the Hendricks County Board of Supervisors and presents a written summary of monthly work accomplishments.
  • Updates and maintains District website and online presence, including posting current public events information
  • Prepares news releases for the media
  • Serves as contact for District, initiating and maintaining communication with local, county, state and federal officials, preparing written reports and maintaining records as required
  • Prepares grant proposals and requests donations for funding of projects
  • Attends meetings and various seminars as Certification or training in, Project Wet, Project Wild, Project Learning Tree, and Go Fish IN.
  • Serves as liaison to various County departments, including the Clean Water Administers Clean Water Indiana funding and other local grants.
  • Assists the District with field days, tillage transects, national resource inventories and soil health workshops
  • Assists the NRCS and the Indiana Department of Agriculture (ISDA) implement United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Bill programs, including assisting with surveys and designs of conservation practices, status review, etc.
  • Answers telephone and greet office visitors, providing information and assistance or directing to appropriate sources of information and assistance.
  • Works and communicates with landowners to increase conservation in the District
  • Maintains District owned or leased equipment and vehicles

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors Degree in Natural Resources, Education or related field and/or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Thorough knowledge of natural resources, agriculture, storm water management, storm water quality and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks and operations
  • Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and Ability to prepare written reports and grant proposals accordingly
  • Ability to properly operate a variety of standard office equipment including telephone, computer, calculator, camera, etc.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to speak comfortably in front of a group
  • Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct
  • Ability to compare and contrast differences in data, people or things
  • Ability to coordinate and compile data, make determinations, and present findings in oral or written form
  • Ability to compute/perform arithmetic operations including calculating, recording monetary donations, and developing project budget
  • Ability to file, post, mail materials and maintain accurate records as required.
  • Ability to prepare written documents, informational packets and displays, and plan and present educational programs and workshops
  • Ability to understand, retain and follow oral or written instructions
  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment
  • Ability to plan and layout assigned work projects
  • Ability to work extended, evening and/or weekend hours, and travel out of town for conferences and training, sometimes overnight
  • Possess a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving

WORKI N G RELATIONSHIPS:

Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other departments of the county, state and federal government and the public for the purposes of exchanging information and rendering program assistance and services.

Incumbent reports directly to the Hendricks County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Incumbent performs work in a standard office environment as well as outdoors. This includes sitting for long periods, standing/ walking for long periods, carrying/ lifting under 25 pounds, keyboarding, speaking and hearing sounds/ communication. These activities can involve extreme hot or cold temperatures, wet/ icy ground conditions and uneven terrain.
